Alejandro Garnacho is giving priority to a move to Roma as talks with Chelsea continue.
The Argentina winger has opened the door to a switch to the Italian capital, with club-to-club discussions ongoing.
Fabrizio Romano reports the deal now hinges on how any transfer is structured. The two clubs are apart on the framework.
Chelsea are insisting on a permanent, guaranteed exit, while Roma have offered a loan with a buy clause that would become mandatory if certain conditions are met. Bridging that gap is the key to any agreement. The figures are close, at least.
Roma have proposed a €5m loan fee plus a €35m option, totalling around €40m, while Chelsea want a straight €50m sale. That would recoup roughly what they paid Manchester United for Garnacho only a year ago.
Garnacho gives Roma priority as Chelsea hold firm on exit
His first season at Stamford Bridge underwhelmed. Garnacho started just 22 matches across all competitions, struggling for consistency and a regular role. His difficult debut campaign has prompted both club and player to seek a fresh start.
The player’s own preference is clear. Garnacho has been excluded from Chelsea’s pre-season training and wants regular football, with the chance to link up with fellow Argentine Paulo Dybala at Roma said to be a strong draw.
Xabi Alonso has all but confirmed the departure. “We have spoken with the sports directors, and there is interest from other clubs,” the Chelsea head coach said. “Let’s see how it develops, but hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for all parties.”
Roma are not relying solely on him, though. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are also pursuing West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville while missing out on Christos Tzolis, who has joined Arsenal, as they overhaul their wide options.
For now, the standoff over structure remains. Chelsea are wary of an option-to-buy that could see Garnacho returned in a year, and want the certainty of a permanent deal before sanctioning his exit.
