Political analyst Professor Dirk Kotzé says Zandile Gumede’s strong support base and local government experience make her a valuable addition to the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party (MK Party).
He argues Gumede brings valuable local government experience and a strong support base in eThekwini, which could strengthen MK’s campaign in the province.
However, Kotzé notes that concerns over her unresolved corruption case may carry less electoral weight.
“She’s a former mayor of eThekwini, so that gave her a lot of practical experience of local government administration of government. And therefore, I think she will see this as a career opportunity for her. That’s how many politicians, in the end, how they make the calculations. The fact that she doesn’t have a future in the ANC, given the fact that they suspended her, a court case is not really making any progress. It’s a long, ongoing process. And I think she wants to go now and see, there’s many opportunities in the MK Party.”
