July 14 (UPI) — Utah Jazz guard Trey Alexander injured his side and left on a stretcher during an NBA summer league game against the Chicago Bulls in Las Vegas.
The injury occurred in the final minutes of the Jazz’s 80-63 triumph Monday at Thomas & Mack Center. Alexander was 0 for 5 and totaled one point, six rebounds and three assists for the Jazz.
Jazz summer league coach Steve Wojciechowski did not provide an update on Alexander’s status.
“I actually didn’t see what happened,” Wojciechowski said. “I don’t have an update for you, other than he is being cared for by our medical staff.”
The Jazz led 70-58 with about 2:30 remaining when Alexander dribbled near half court. Bulls forward Caleb Wilson picked up Alexander as he dribbled down the right flank.
Alexander cut his dribble toward the paint and made contact with Wilson’s right hip. He bounced to his right and threw up a shot as Wilson was whistled for a foul. Alexander then grabbed his left side and went to the ground behind the basket. He was then loaded onto a stretcher.
Alexander, who joined the Jazz last week through a two-way contract, averaged 5.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game over nine appearances last season for the New Orleans Pelicans. He posted 1.3 points per game over 24 appearances last season for the Denver Nuggets.
Jonas Aidoo totaled 17 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow Jazz center Orlando Robinson and guard Matt Cleveland chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.
The Jazz will take on the San Antonio Spurs in another summer league game at 9:30 p.m. EDT Wednesday in Las Vegas. The Bulls will play the Washington Wizards at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Thomas & Mack Center.
