There’s a bit more of Bronx vibe to the Mid-Summer Classic.
Selected as reserves, Yankees teammates Ben Rice and Cody Bellinger are scheduled to be in the AL’s starting lineup for Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Philadelphia.
Bellinger is due to bat sixth and play right field and Rice will play first base and bat seventh for manager John Schneider, the Toronto Blue Jays’ skipper.
A series of injuries to AL All-Stars elevated Rice and Bellinger up the depth chart, making Rice a starter in his first All-Star Game appearance (Bellinger has previously been an NL All-Star twice).
Toronto first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., was elected to start by the fans, but decided to rest a nagging lower back issue.
Next in line was Athletics‘ first baseman Nick Kurtz, but the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year is dealing with a thumb strain.
Bellinger got the nod when injured teammate Aaron Judge (right rib fracture) was elected by the fans while on the injured list, and when Minnesota outfielder Byron Buxton hit the IL last week due to a hip strain, reaggravated during a series at Yankee Stadium that concluded July 5.
