LAS VEGAS – A little more than two months after locking up one of their infielders of the future, Cooper Pratt, to a long-term contract extension, the Milwaukee Brewers have now managed to do so with one of their talented young outfielders as well.
According to a source, Luis Lara, the organization’s No. 9-ranked prospect, has agreed in principle to a deal that will pay him around $31 million over seven years beginning this season and includes three club options that could take the contract through 2035.
The extension could max out as high as $78 million if Lara hits all incentives, according to the source, with a more likely landing spot being around $63 million if he plays at a high level through all three option years.
Once it becomes official – the Brewers have not confirmed it as of this point, as the player’s physical was still pending – Lara will join the 40-man roster, although there are no current plans to promote him to the major leagues.
Milwaukee has handled Pratt, who signed an eight-year, $50 million extension, in a similar fashion to this point.
The Brewers’ first move on such a deal, signing Jackson Chourio to an eight-year, $82 million extension in December 2023, was considered something of a trailblazing pact at the time considering the outfielder had yet to play in the major leagues at that point.
Chourio has since gone on to become one of Milwaukee’s top all-around players.
Lara, 21, is a premier defender in center field, having won the minor-league version of the 2025 Rawlings Gold Glove Award with the Class AA Biloxi Shuckers in 2025. His teammate, Pratt, called him the best outfielder he’s ever played with.
But Lara’s offense – the damage he’s done, in particular – is finally catching up to his exploits with the glove.
After having never hit more than four home runs or slugged more than .377 for a full-season team, Lara has gone deep seven times in just 56 games while slugging .500 in his first experience at Class AAA Nashville – an impressive showing thus far for a player who checks in at just 5 feet 7 inches tall and 169 pounds.
Lara is also batting .338 with an OPS of .947 and has stolen 18 bases in 22 attempts.
