Graham Potter is closing in on a return to management — this time on the international stage. He’s in advanced discussions to become Sweden’s new head coach, and talks are said to be progressing quickly.
Sweden are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Jon Dahl Tomasson following a disastrous start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. With just one point from four games and sitting bottom of Group B, the Swedish FA has turned to someone with a proven track record in their football system — and Potter fits the bill perfectly.
Potter is no stranger to Swedish football. He spent seven years transforming Ostersunds FK, taking them from the fourth tier to the top division and winning the Swedish Cup in 2017. His success there made him a cult figure in the country, and he still owns a home in Sweden.
Since leaving Ostersunds, he’s managed Swansea, Brighton, and Chelsea, and most recently West Ham, where he was dismissed in September after eight months.
Sweden’s decision to act came after a 1-0 home defeat to Kosovo. Despite boasting attackers like Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres, the team drew with Slovenia and lost to both Switzerland and Kosovo in their first qualifiers. However, thanks to topping their UEFA Nations League group, they still have a lifeline through the play-offs.
Potter has already publicly expressed his affection for Sweden and enthusiasm for the national team role. If a deal is finalised, he’ll take charge of a squad with serious talent, desperate to revive their World Cup hopes.
