October 15, 2025 – Former NFL offensive lineman Charles Leno Jr. officially announced his retirement from football on Tuesday, revealing that the decision was deeply influenced by a personal tragedy two years ago. Leno shared the news in an emotional three-page letter posted on Instagram, marking the exact moment he learned of the miscarriage his wife, Jen, suffered while he was preparing for a Washington Commanders game in Atlanta in 2023.
In his heartfelt message, Leno wrote, “That day changed everything for me. It changed the way I see life, the way I carry myself, and most of all, it changed what matters most to me.” The miscarriage, he explained, reshaped his perspective on life, sparking the decision to walk away from the game he had played for a decade.
A Legendary Career
The 34-year-old offensive tackle had a remarkable 10-season NFL career, playing in 149 games, starting 141 of them for the Chicago Bears and the Washington Commanders. Drafted in the seventh round by Chicago in 2014, Leno quickly established himself as one of the league’s most reliable left tackles, earning a Pro Bowl selection in 2019. He went on to play three seasons with Washington, before being placed on injured reserve in December 2023 and ultimately released in the 2024 offseason.
While his football career was filled with accolades, including a reputation as one of the most durable linemen in the league, Leno acknowledged that his priorities had shifted after the personal loss.
Embracing a New Role
In his retirement message, Leno expressed immense gratitude for the support he received from teammates, coaches, and fans over the years. However, he emphasized that his most important role was now that of a full-time husband and father. “Football was a chapter. A big one,” he wrote. “But my story continues as I step into the most important role of my life.”
Leno also dedicated his retirement to the daughter he and Jen lost, Paitynn, calling her their “Angel.” He ended his letter with a powerful message: “This moment is for you. Daddy loves you forever. I carry you with me every day.”
Leno’s decision to retire marks the end of an era for a player who was not only known for his on-field talent but also his resilience and heart. Now, he steps into a new chapter of life, committed to his family and the memories of his beloved daughter.
