Santa Clara, CA — October 9, 2025 — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy missed practice on Wednesday due to a persistent turf toe injury, further clouding his status for the team’s upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Purdy, who has missed three of the past four games because of the injury, continues to struggle with the effects of the ailment, and his availability for Week 6 is in doubt.
Despite the setback, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reassured reporters that the team does not expect Purdy to require a stint on injured reserve. “It hasn’t been a thought on placing Brock on IR,” Shanahan said. “He’s progressing, but we’ll continue to monitor how he responds to treatment.”
Backup quarterback Mac Jones was also limited in practice on Wednesday, as he deals with two injuries of his own. Although the extent of Jones’ ailments has not been fully disclosed, his limited participation has added another layer of uncertainty to the 49ers’ quarterback situation heading into the weekend.
With Purdy’s availability in question, the 49ers may be forced to turn to veteran options or adjust their game plan if neither of their top quarterbacks is ready to play. Shanahan and the coaching staff are hopeful that Purdy can recover in time, but they remain cautious with his injury, especially as the season progresses.
As the 49ers prepare for their road matchup against the Buccaneers, the status of Purdy and Jones will remain a key storyline for the team. With the NFC West race heating up, San Francisco will need its quarterback situation resolved quickly to maintain its position at the top of the division.
