Bayer Leverkusen will be without their star striker, Patrik Schick, for several weeks after the Czech international suffered a thigh injury in Saturday’s 4-0 Bundesliga win against St. Pauli. Schick, who has been in excellent form with three goals and one assist in the first five league games, was substituted just before the final whistle in Hamburg.
The 29-year-old forward will likely miss a few key fixtures, including Leverkusen’s upcoming Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. However, the club is hopeful he could return for their Bundesliga match against Mainz 05 on October 18.
“Schick should be able to return to the Werkself squad for the Bundesliga away game at Mainz 05,” the club said in a statement.
Leverkusen are currently fifth in the Bundesliga with eight points, seven behind leaders Bayern Munich. They will need Schick back as soon as possible, particularly as they continue to adapt to the new management under coach Kasper Hjulmand. Leverkusen have already seen a significant shake-up this season following the departure of several key players, including Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Granit Xhaka, and the mid-season sacking of manager Erik ten Hag.
Schick’s absence could also impact the Czech Republic’s World Cup qualifiers against Croatia and the Faroe Islands, where the Czechs are battling for top spot in their group.
