Real Madrid came from behind to beat Mallorca 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, overcoming the frustration of having three goals disallowed by VAR to maintain their perfect start in La Liga with three wins from three matches.
Despite dominating, Madrid fell behind in the 18th minute when Mallorca striker Vedat Muriqi bundled the ball home from a corner.
The hosts hit back in the 37th minute as Dean Huijsen set up 20-year-old Arda Guler to head in from close range. Just a minute later, Vinicius Jr turned the game around with a brilliant solo effort, cutting inside onto his left foot before firing low into the corner for the winner.
Kylian Mbappe thought he had opened the scoring earlier, only for VAR to rule him narrowly offside. He also had a second strike overturned before halftime, while Guler saw another effort ruled out for handball in the build-up after the break.
Madrid needed a crucial goalline clearance from summer signing Alvaro Carreras late on to deny Mallorca an equaliser.
Head coach Xabi Alonso praised his side’s resilience heading into the international break, saying he was pleased with the progress and looking forward to the upcoming Champions League campaign.
