Go Back Home – English Club Terminates Super Eagles Player’s Contract for Late Preseason Return
Barnsley FC has officially terminated the contract of Nigerian international midfielder Kelechi Nwakali after he resumed late for preseason training. The League One club’s head coach, Conor Hourihane, confirmed the decision during a press conference ahead of their clash with Peterborough United.
Nwakali, 26, returned late from holidays in Nigeria, which led to his exclusion from first-team training and matchday squads. His absence affected his participation in recent fixtures against Plymouth Argyle, Burton Albion, Fleetwood Town, and Bolton Wanderers.
This isn’t the first time Nwakali has faced disciplinary issues—he was previously released by Spanish side Huesca under similar circumstances. Despite having two years left on his contract and making 26 appearances last season, Barnsley has opted to part ways with the midfielder.
Coach Hourihane stated, “Obviously there’s a couple of weeks to go in the window. Let’s see where it takes us.” When asked directly about Nwakali’s future, he responded firmly, “Yes, that’s the plan.”
The club has instructed Nwakali to return home, marking a disappointing chapter in the player’s career and underscoring the importance of professionalism and punctuality in elite football.
