Gareth Taylor has been appointed as the new head coach of Liverpool Women, the club announced on Friday. This move comes five months after Taylor was dismissed by Manchester City following a series of underwhelming results with the Cityzens’ women’s team.
At 52, Taylor brings with him a wealth of experience. He spent five years at the helm of Manchester City Women, during which he guided the team to multiple successes, including FA Cup and League Cup victories. In the 2024 Women’s Super League (WSL), he led City to a narrow second-place finish, losing out to Chelsea on goal difference.
However, despite his successes, his tenure at City ended in March, just days before their League Cup final against Chelsea, with the club citing underperformance as the reason for his sacking. After finishing fourth in the WSL last season, Manchester City parted ways with Taylor, while Liverpool Women ended the season in seventh place.
Taylor is excited by the challenge ahead at Liverpool. “Everyone in football knows about the history, size, and potential of Liverpool, and I am really looking forward to the task ahead,” he said. “Our aim is to create a team that supporters can be proud of, which plays good football and which will hopefully bring success along the way.”
Andy O’Boyle, managing director of Liverpool’s women’s programme, praised Taylor’s appointment, emphasizing his proven ability to build successful, identity-driven teams. “His track record of developing players and helping them reach the next level is second to none,” O’Boyle said.
With Taylor now in charge, Liverpool Women are hoping to bounce back and build a competitive squad that can challenge the top teams in the WSL once again.
